Changes in Deep Ocean Contribute to a “See‐Sawing” Gulf Stream Path

چکیده

This study demonstrates that a decrease of the water-mass density below 1000m has led to pattern see-saw shift in Gulf Stream position between 74° and 50° W longitude during 1993-2017, with New England Seamounts as pivot point. The moved northward upstream region shifted southward downstream. Our EOF analyses satellite altimeter data demonstrate second mode (EOF2) represents changes strength therefore can be used an index for Atlantic Meridional Overturing Circulation (AMOC). Decreasing water is also principal mechanism driving weakening Stream.
